Cambridge vote race
Posted by Robert Alcock on February 24, 2008 9:20 PM
THIS week’s Visiter previews what is likely to be the most closely fought battle for a council seat in Southport on May 1 – that in Cambridge ward.
For a number of years there has been something akin to stasis in the town’s political geography. The Conservatives hold three councillors apiece in Ainsdale and Dukes wards (a generally affluent southern coastal strip) with commanding majorities – in Ainsdale Cllr Terry Jones led his nearest rival by 1,400+ votes in 2007. For the Lib-Dems, Kew and Norwood are A-1 bastions while their positions in Birkdale and Meols (majorties 584 and 827 in 2007) are also sturdy.

A PROPOSED law on equal rights for agency workers receives its second reading in the Commons today and the buzz around it is significant.
The private members bill (PMB) introduced by Ellesmere Port Labour MP Andrew Miller has been making the main bulletins of the BBC, despite being unlikely to make it to the statute book in its current form.

THE saga surrounding the political future of Councillor David Pearson appears finally to be drawing to a close.
And the news of Wednesday night’s meeting of Southport Conservative Association’s Executive Committee has confounded some expectations – confirming the popular Dukes ward figure will defend his seat in May.

LAST week saw the return of Southport Area Committee after its new year recess and as usual there was a cornucopia of good local issues raised and (occasionally) resolved.
Sefton's Star Power

IT would be churlish not to doff caps to Sefton’s maximum four star rating by the Audit Commission, announced on Thursday – particularly when it was languishing on only two stars not so long ago.
Caring about the postcode lottery

AMID all the headline-grabbing scandal of late about various MPs’ donations and family-friendly employment practices, let’s not forget the real flesh-and-bones issues doing the rounds. A case in point – last week’s hard-hitting report by the UK’s social care watchdog, the Commission for Social Care Inspection.
